CORRIE BECOMES ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
Lewiston—The President of the Board of the Maine Music Society, Dr. Edward Z. Walworth, announced this week that John Corrie has been named the new Artistic Director of the organization that includes the Androscoggin Chorale and the Maine Chamber Ensemble. “We are delighted that John has agreed to accept the expanded role of Artistic Director. He brings enthusiasm, wonderful musical ability, and many years of experience as a conductor,” Walworth stated.
A member of the Androscoggin Chorale, alto Susan Trask added, “John has brought new energy to rehearsals and a new outlook for the singers. He’s a singer and a vocal coach himself, and approaches all the music we sing from the standpoint of making beautiful sound. We are learning new techniques and having a lot of fun in the process.”
John Corrie holds degrees from Oberlin Conservatory of Music, Northwestern University School of Music and Yale University School of Music. A Fulbright-Hays Scholar, Mr. Corrie studied organ and harpsichord at the Hochschule fur Musik in Vienna, Austria, in 1972-1973. He has been teaching at Bates College since 1982, where he is a Lecturer in Music. He conducts the Bates College Choir, teaches musicianship classes, and also gives private lessons in voice, organ and harpsichord. Since 1982, Mr. Corrie has been organist and choir director of the Church of St. Mary the Virgin (Episcopal), in Falmouth.
This past spring, John Corrie was named Interim Music Director of the Maine Music Society. He has recently been elected as President of the Maine Chapter of the National Association of Teachers of Singing. Mr. Corrie is a frequent performer in Concert Series at the Portland Conservatory, Olin Arts Center at Bates College, and in other Maine venues, in particular at the Claremont Hotel, in Southwest Harbor.
At two upcoming concerts, Mr. Corrie will conduct the Androscoggin Chorale in Benjamin Britten’s A Ceremony of Carols and other Christmas selections. These will be on Saturday, December 9th at the First Congregational Church in South Paris at 7:30 PM and on Sunday, December 10th at the Franco-American Heritage Center in Lewiston at 3:00 PM.
