The Maine Chamber Ensemble is a professional chamber orchestra based in Lewiston-Auburn. It was formed in 1987 in response to the Androscoggin Chorale's increasingly sophisticated programming and need for orchestral accompaniment. Peter Frewen oversaw the creation of the Maine Chamber Ensemble and the Maine Music Society interim Director John Corrie now conducts the group.
The members are professional musicians who live and work in Maine. Many are members of the Portland Symphony Orchestra, the Bangor Symphony Orchestra, and applied music faculties of Maine colleges and universities. Several belong to other established chamber groups. A number have their own private studios.
Over the past decade, the Maine Chamber Ensemble has become a popular, highly respected addition to the state's classical music scene. Audiences througout central and western Maine have responded enthusiastically to its artistic integrity.
One purpose of the Maine Chamber Ensemble is to provide more opportunities for professional musicians in this state. In addition to its own concerts, the ensemble often accompanies the Androscoggin Chorale and Brunswick's Oratorio Chorale. Ensemble members also perform and quartets and quintets for community and school programs.
